Heavy Lifting and Wreck Removal: Scaldis

DEME Group companies have been involved in wreck removal and salvage operations for almost a century. This activity is currently concentrated in the specialist company “Scaldis Salvage and Marine Contractors.”

Recent wreck removals include three successive campaigns, involving more than 70 wrecks and various objects, in the river Scheldt. Another prestigious contract was the raising of the Tricolor autocarrier off the French coast. DEME not only contributed its decisive Horizontal Directional Drilling technique, but assigned almost all offshore plant as well. In 2007 the wreck of the container vessel “Rokia Delmas”, that foundered off the French Coast along Ile de Ré, was successfully removed.

Over the past two decades, DEME-companies were involved in the raising of the Herald of Free Enterprise ferryboat at Zeebrugge, the salvage of the huge accommodation platform West-Gamma in the German Bight, and the removal of the Mont Louis freighter in 1985.

Heavy lifting operations include the positioning of 150 2,200 ton girders that together made up for the 13 km Vasco da Gama bridge over the Tagus river in Lisbon.

Wreck removal and heavy lifting are carried out with the sheerlegs Norma, the 3,000 ton heavy lifting vessel Rambiz, and various plant and jack-ups.
