Dimitri Coppens
Technical Superintendent
Employed since: 01/08/’07
Why did you choose DEME?
Although DEME is active in a lot of areas, earth moving in all its shapes and forms by means of dredges remains one of its core activities. Navigation has always fascinated me and I realised that a job within DEME would offer me the opportunity to move towards that direction. Especially the job of technical superintendent, where one is in charge of the entire technical follow-up of a dredge, intrigued me. That in combination with the possibility of travelling around the world, acquiring responsibilities relatively soon and a no nonsense company policy, has contributed to my choice of working for DEME.
What do you like about your job?
The technical superintendent is in charge of the technical follow-up of a dredge. You thoroughly get to know this rather impressive machine. Wherever you go, on every single site you make sure that “your” ship gets the necessary support. In dry dock, the technical superintendent takes control from the very beginning until the very end.
Of course there is more than just the technical side of the job: you work in close cooperation with the vessel crew and you get to know different countries and cultures, each requiring a different approach. At the end of the day, the constant variation and the many challenges are the reasons why this job gives me satisfaction.
Would you recommend DEME to friends and acquaintances? Why?
Absolutely. The dredging world is an unusual world and is not comparable with any other line of business. To those who want to broaden their horizons and expand in a job with sufficient challenges, I would certainly recommend a visit to DEME.
