Tom Wuilmus

Onboard Electrician Orwell
Employed since: 03/03/’08

Why did you choose DEME?

I graduated in 2005 as an electromechanical bachelor with a major in instrument engineering. I then started working as a maintenance technician in the chemical industry. I heard about DEME by coincidence and soon figured out that this would be a much more interesting opportunity for me. Working on board of a vessel provides so much more variety than working in a factory.

What do you like about your job?

I’m the onboard electrician for the hopper dredger Orwell, which means that I’m responsible for all electricity related problems ranging from changing a bulb to replacing the electrical wiring of complicated machines. I’m in constant dialogue with both the chief engineer and the technical superintendent. The variety of responsibilities and the diversity of technical issues I come across are incredibly challenging.

Would you recommend DEME to friends and acquaintances? Why?

Of course, but only if you are flexible, proactive and not afraid of the unknown.
