General Information

The Gorai River is one of the waterways that carry the melt- and monsoon-waters through Bangladesh into the Gulf of Bengal. But that is only in periods of high water levels. For, during the dry season no water can run through the river, due to the massive affluence of sediments in the preceding months.

After intensive studies it was decided that the best solution was re-excavation of the riverbed.

For the execution of the job, the temporary association G.R.C. (Gorai River Contractors) was established.

Execution of the works were scheduled in a partnering approach between the Client, the Consultant and the Contractor.

Description of the works

The first season’s work, removing around 8.85 million cu m, had been undertaken by two medium-sized cutter suction dredgers, A single cutter suction dredger, again of medium size, was assigned for the second season in which work consisted of maintenance of depths achieved on the first phase. Tugboats and service vessels, barges, floating and shore crane and dry fill equipment assisted the dredgers.

Approximately 495 personnel were directly employed on this project, drawn from 11 different countries.

In total the project involved the dredging and discharge of nearly 16 mio m3 of sandy material over three seasons.
In between the seasons the river was monitored to study the impact of high flows on the modified riverbed.
