General Information

Campaign 1996 - 1997

Situation

Dredging location :
The slurry was dredged in the entrance channel to Kallosluis on the left bank of the river Scheldt, at a depth varying from 0 m to 20 m.

Storage location:
The slurry was stored in over depths dredged in the docks on the left bank of the river Scheldt (Doeldok, Vrasendok and Waaslandkanaal).

Transport :
The slurry was transported hydraulically using a pressure pipe.

Execution

The dredging works were carried out using the sweep dredger (Brabo), which dredged up the polluted sludge (class III in accordance with the 3rd Water Housekeeping Memorandum (Dutch standard) in an environmentally and economically profitable way and pumped it directly via a 4 to 6 km long pressure pipe to a diffusor pontoon (Demer), where the sludge was spread with a minimum of particle disturbance in the over depths.

The production achieved amounted to approximately 700 TDS per hour. The total volume removed and stored amounted to 898,302 TDS. If we assume an average on site density of 1.3 T/m3 this amounted to around 1,842,670 m3 .
Using the same diffusor pontoon a layer of sand was introduced underwater on top of the sludge to seal the deposit.
