General Information

The Altenwerder area is located on the left bank of the Elbe river. Under a new port development plan, integrated services for container handling, storage and transport will be brought together on a 215 ha site.

Description of the works

At the end of 1997, the PEARL RIVER executed the first phase of dredging and reclamation works, which raised the level of the site to 7.5 metres.

Sand had to be dredged on a borrow area in the Outer Elbe, quite a distance from the new terminal.
During its transport upriver, the sand load had to be desalinated.

Thanks to its 144 water jets and its powerful pumps, a double rinsing of the bin guaranteed a 2,25 fold dilution of the salt content.
