Description of the works
Over the past months, the self-propelled cutter suction dredger Aquarius has carried out important deepening works in the southern port of Umm Qasr.
No doubt Umm Qasr offers a peculiar working environment.
There was, for instance, the permanent presence of American and British troops and rolling stock and there were the extreme temperatures and the risks of stumbling on live ammunition.
The large amounts of scrap in the access channel, made it necessary to clean the cutter head every fifteen minutes. Therefore we welded grids in the cutter head. After that we were able to dredge for three to four hours in succession.
The continuous concern for the safety of people and equipment and a whole series of safety measures helped the joint venture to bring this urgent assignment to a satisfactory conclusion. |
