General Information

The Maldives Housing and Urban Development Board called for tenders for the reclamation of an artificial Island of about 195 ha, the same size as the capital island Male but 1m higher.
The main reason for the construction of such an island is that Male is getting congested and overcrowded with no place left to expand.

Description of the works

The contract, awarded to the IPEM-Dredging International J.V., consisted of 3 contracts:

  1. A reclamation contract 1.200.000m3 of ‘coral sand’;
  2. A contract for the building of a 800m quay wall double sheet pile wall with capping beam;
  3. An additional reclamation contract 2.800.000m3.

The ‘Amazone’ completed reclamation of Hulhumale island by end May and the rest of the nearly 4 Mio m3 were completed on 17th of June. By that time, practical requirements and further fine-tuning of the destination of the balance 600.000m3 had resulted in another variation: the creation first of a 50m wide causeway linking Hulhumale to the Hulhule Airport island, length 1.6 km along the outer reef boundary.

It was one of the most challenging parts in the project to have ‘Amazone’ digging a one-cut wide channel through the shallow reef, while working forward on land and all that surrounded by sea-planes taking off or coming down just meters above ‘Amazone’s’ deck crane. At certain locations there was an unexpectedly high presence of large coral boulders making production difficult but overall. Works were completed within budget, both for the client as well as for the contractor.
